Nine people, who perished in a grisly road accident last week along Nyeri-Nyahururu road, were laid to rest at Kaboya village in Ndaragwa, Nyandarua County on Tuesday.

Youth, Public and Gender Affairs CS Sicily Kariuki, who attended the requiem mass for the victims at Ngai Ndeithia Secondary School, urged traffic police officers to take charge of the sector and ensure road carnage was completely wiped out.

“Now that the NTSA is out of our roads, the blame game is over and you are now fully responsible for everything that happens on our roads,” she said.

Kariuki, while regretting that youthful drivers enjoyed speeding, urged motorists to be careful and adhere to road safety regulations to avert further loss of life.

Laikipia County Women representative Catherine Waruguru said she will introduce a motion in parliament that will compel drivers renewing their licenses to undergo fresh tests.

SPEEDING DRIVERS

“We also have to regulate the number of hours these drivers spend on the road and always test them for alcohol and substance abuse,” she said.

Her counterpart from Nyandarua county, Faith Gitau, said she would sponsor a motion in parliament that would see speeding drivers sentenced to a one-month jail term without the option of a fine.

“We want Michuki rules enforced on our roads. Were it not for speeding our people would not have perished,” she said.

Nyeri county Women MP, Rahab Mukami, said there is need for drivers to undergo mandatory training with the National Youth Service (NYS) to acquire discipline and adequate skills for the roads.

The nine victims, among them a two-year-old child, died after the vehicle they were travelling in rolled at Kianugu area.

Four of the victims, including the baby’s mother, Lucy Muthoni, are fighting for their lives at Nyahururu and Kijabe hospitals.
