Sonko Addresses Reports of Reverting Nairobi County to the National Government

Mike Sonko has dismissed reports that President Uhuru Kenyatta intends to scrap the county and revert its administration to the national government.

According to some media reports, Murang’a Senator Kembi Gitura proposed a law to give powers to the President to nominate a cabinet secretary to head the city.

But according to Sonko, initiatives taken to enhance deeper collaboration between Nairobi county and the national government had been misunderstood.

“During my inauguration, I was clear that because Nairobi is an international hub, I will partner with the national government in implementing various projects to ensure that Nairobi residents receive services.”

Sonko cited the programme in which the national government has equipped county hospitals and said Nairobi county will conduct joint projects to modernise roads and infrastructure.

This includes a railway line from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to the city centre, and more roads with overpasses to reduce traffic jams.

“These mega projects, you must partner with the national government,” said Sonko on Thursday.

“It is in the law that issues like public private partnerships, borrowing and many others require partnership with the national government.”
